The Imo State Police Command on Monday 31st July, 2017 inaugurated Special Police Squad for Owerri Metropolis to deal with crimes and criminality within the state capital. Upon commissioning of the special security squad at the Police Headquarters, Owerri, over 100 police officers were deployed with specially made and equipped Anti-Crime patrol vehicles and motorbikes to carry out assignments to fish out and contend the activities of criminals in areas designated as flash points.
The State Commissioner of Police CP Chris O. Ezike while inaugurating the squad disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police IGP Ibrahim K. Idris, NPM, mni received 20 special vehicles from Imo State Government on behalf of Imo Police Command for the project stating that the vehicles were specially made for security within Owerri Capital Territory to ensure that Imo people sleep with their eyes closed. The CP added that the officers have been trained to protect the peoples’ right and psychologically prepared to contend the activities of criminals within the capital city of Owerri. The CP appealed to the people of the state to volunteer information to enable it actualize the mission of dealing with crime and criminality stressing that information is key in the fight against crime and criminality.
During the inauguration, the representative of the state Governor, Chief – of – Staff, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu thanked the state police commissioner for thinking differently and creating a special squad for Owerri metropolis adding that the priority of the government is to collaborate with the police to effectively checkmate the activities of criminals in the state.
