OPINION: Gov. Okorocha’s age caveat on Imo guber seat in 2019- By Gele Agbai

gv6-1Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo State recently issued a caveat with regards to the governorship seat of his state. According to him, any one who is 50 years of age and above should do well to forget the state’s topmost political job. In the world of the state chief executive officer, indigenes jostling for Douglas House Owerri should jettison their ambitions if by 2019 they clock the chronological age of 50.
Only few among those being rumoured to have their eyes on the seat are below 50 and won’t attain the ‘detestable’ age of 50.

The duo of Deacon Chike Okafor, member for Okigwe South Constituency in the House of Representatives and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, Chief of Staff, Government House Owerri and son-in-law to the governor are the ones favoured by the governor’s caveat. All others namely ex-Secretary to Government of Imo State, SGI, Jude Ejiogu; Deputy Governor,;Prince Eze Madumere; Speaker of the state legislature, Rt. Hon. Acho Ihim; and Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume, the only person to have formally indicated interest in the seat are above 50 already.
Ironically, while Okorocha does not want anyone who is 50 years and above to occupy Douglas House, Owerri, he has already endorsed for a second term, President Muhammadu Buhari, a man who is officially 74 years but is believed to be above 80 years. He also nominated an 84-year-old man for an ambassadorial position.

The governor’s stance on age is a breach of the constitution which prescribes 35 years as minimum age for election into the governor’s office without any ceiling on age. This being so, the governor’s caveat is neither here nor there.
Therefore, interested individuals who are 50 and above should rev up their campaigns to succeed the governor on 29th May, 2019.

However, Imolites are advised not to be fooled by rhetoric this time. They must examine manifestos of parties and their candidates, their work- ability and methods/strategies of execution/delivery.
