Over the weekend, Sen.Arthur Nzeribe received guber hopeful, Rt.Hon Emeka Ihedioha and his supporters in his Oguta residence.
In that meeting, the elder-statesman assured the Deputy Speaker that the entire Imo State were in total support of his governorship ambition and said he would stop at nothing to ensure that Chief Ihedioha becomes the next governor of Imo State come 2015. I have a problem with that.
It’s one thing to speak for your immediate community where you have a strong hold but its a whole different ball game when you thump your chest speaking for a whole state.
Chief Nzeribe is notably one of the major political heavy weights in Imo state but how far can his endorsement go?
I recall that in 2011, he threw his weight behind Chief Ikedi Ohakim as he nursed his second term governorship bid to return to Douglas House. Imo state recorded her first defeat of an incumbent governor. Other failed endorsements include Dr. Ezekiel Izuogu in 1999 and Dr.Alex Obi in 1991 who was defeated by a less popular candidate, late Chief Evan Enwerem of NRC.
Chief Nzeribe himself has also had his own bitter taste of defeat. His third (actually fourth) missionary journey to the hallowed chambers of the Senate was aborted when he failed to win the votes of his constituency in 2007. Memories of that embarrassing outing at the polls is still fresh in our memories.
As we head back to the polls in 2015, how valuable is an endorsement from Chief Arthur Nzeribe?
