Governor Rochas Okorocha has appealed to Nigerians to promote ideas and programmes that would strengthen the peace and unity of the nation. Governor Okorocha made the appeal during a meeting with the traditional rulers in the State held at the Traditional Council Parliament Owerri.
The State Governor expressed hope that the proposed National Conference would provide Nigerians the needed opportunity to deliberate on issues that would strengthen the bonds of unity and appealed to all to guard against utterances that could breed discord among the diverse ethnic and religious groups in the country.
Owelle Okorocha posited that Nigeria, irrespective of the pitfalls it has experienced, must remain an indivisible entity and enjoined all to make contributions towards the realization of peace and stability of the nation. He however condemned in strong terms the wanton killings by the Boko Haram sect especially the killing of innocent students and called on the marauders to seize the opportunity of the Confab to voice out their grievances.
The Governor announced plans by the State government to celebrate in a special way the 100 years of Nigeria’s existence where prayers will be offered for the continued unity of the nation.
Governor Okorocha further called on the traditional rulers to embrace the Palm for Palm Programme of the State government as well as encourage agriculture in their respective communities as a veritable source of income and wealth creation. He expressed worries over the neglect of agriculture due to over dependence on revenue from crude oil and the crave for white-collar jobs, pointing out that the majority of the Igbo population stand the risk of facing hunger and starvation in the event of any national crises. He therefore urged Ndigbo to return to agriculture especially the palm production which provided a rich source of revenue.
The Governor also announced that arrangements have been concluded for the conduct of the Community Government Council (CGC) elections slated to hold on Saturday, 8th of March 2014 in all the 637 communities of the State and charged traditional rulers to ensure free and fair conduct of the elections.
He announced the approval of Security votes for traditional rulers as well as the approved payment of other allowances and entitlement of the royal fathers as part of measures to encourage community vigilance on security.
