Governor Rochas Okorocha has begun marking his second year anniversary with the celebration of Imo Freedom Day.
Imo Day of freedom represents May 6th, the day the governor was declared winner through the supplementary election in 2011.
The event however offered the opportunity for the commissioners to present to Imolites their achievements in their various ministries.
Governor Okorocha explained that the freedom day is slated to mark the 6th of may 2011, the day Imo people took their destiny in their hands and voted at the supplementary election which brought about the victory at the poll and thanked those who fought and sacrificed their lives to bring about the change Imo people are enjoying today.
Governor Okorocha said that he is in politics to contribute to the well being of his people and not for personal gains.
“I am in this business of politics not for what I can get from the system, but for what I can give to the system”. He said that he has no other ambition than to move Imo state forward through developmental projects.
Earlier, the members of the state Executive Council used the opportunity to present their score cards.
Prominent amongst them were the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Nick Oparandudu. He said that his ministry under the rescue mission administration has performed creditably in the area of massive road transformation. According to the commissioner, all the major roads in the city are dualised and massive road rehabilitation and construction are also ongoing at Okigwe.
He said that the state government earmarked N27 Billion to be spent on rural roads, out of which N15 billion has been spent, 200km of Imo roads asphalted, while 500 km still ongoing and 50km resurfaced with asphalt.
In Owerri metropolis, he said that the government has rehabilitated and constructed many new roads including 2 bridges fully completed. They include Akanchawa, Udenwa, Holy Ghost road-70% completed, Sam Mbakwe road and many others.
Also giving his score card, the Commissioner for commerce and Industry said that Imo state government has completed the Standard Shoe Industry which has given 200 jobs to Imo citizens, city shopping mall at Orlu is ongoing, the construction of building materials and general goods market Umungwa Obowo, Relief market Umuowa orlu and Naze industrial cluster market.
