Only God will deliver Okorocha from the affliction of his detractors.

It is only God that will deliver Governor Rochas Okorocha from the affliction of his detractors.  When people identify the star in you, they start looking  for ways to discredit you. For crying out loud, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo just left Imo State barely three weeks ago where he spoke highly of Governor Rochas Okorocha at the wedding reception of the laters daughter. If you missed his powerful speech, click here to read it.

Fast forward to January 20th, we wake up to publications left and right saying that Obasanjo   called out Governor Okorocha as a failure. How is that possible?

The Obasanjo we know is not senile and definitely does not speak from both sides of the mouth. This writer is of the opinion that his words are certainly being miscontrued by michief makers looking for the slightest opportunity to pull down the fast rising image of the Imo Governor. Going by his speech in Owerri recently, the former President has nothing but genuine love towards the person of Rochas Okorocha irrespective of their party affiliations. Why are people in some quarters uncomfortable with the relationship? Is there something we don’t know?

As the story goes, Governor Rochas Okorocha was an invited guest at a reception held in honour of the Former President. Speaking at the occassion, he talked about his early days when he served as Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs to Obasanjo .

“Obasanjo is indeed PDP. But in the actual sense, he’s a national leader. He does not belong to the PDP alone but a national leader of Nigeria. If I have another opportunity to advise him, I will tell him to be the national leader of the country and not the national leader of the party.

“We are here to give honour to whom honour is due. Obasanjo will remain immovable and unshakable. He is a man that is very difficult to describe. He represents different things to different people. But for me, he represents a former colleague. We both ran for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And later when he appointed me as his adviser, I gave him all the good advice.

All the good things he did for those eight years, I advised him but all the bad ones he did, I travelled out of the country. I want to join Nigerians to celebrate this icon — this great and steadfast Nigerian, who is not afraid of fighting any battle. But when he starts fighting he doesn’t stop until he finishes fighting. He’s a general’s general and a soldier’s soldier….”

Acknowledging the elder statesman as an Icon, Governor Okorocha’s speech was filled with appreciation and humour. It is only a bitter person or sadist that will fail to identify the humour. Even when Chief Obasanjo responded, he also threw a subtle punch at the Governor over failing to win his Presidential bid.

This was what he said:

“ I met him not long ago by virtue of the fact that he was brought up in Jos which is one of the few cities that I found in the 50s and 70s as a genuine melting pot in Nigeria; he probably would not have been able to achieve what he has achieved. He is a true Nigerian. And when he wants to pull me down, he will say we are colleagues. How can I be a colleague of a failure? You are a failure in contesting for the presidency of Nigeria!”

Your speech gladdens my heart in a particular way, but we know why you have to take a detour. Now you have taken the detour, it is time to come back home and your speech is an indication that you are returning”

When Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio made his speech, he also chipped on the joke  between the former head of state and Governor Okorocha with a disclaimer that he did not have the privilege of working with Obasanjo and did not give any of advice. Continuing, he added that  judging  from the way “Baba” behaved, he was very sure that even the few things that he may have done wrong were actually taken out of the bad pieces of advice of APGA that Rochas Okorocha represented. LOL!

If anything, Governor Okorocha was indirectly being lobbied to return to PDP so Joi John is asking, what is the hullabaloo about ?
