Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Chinedu Offor has berated utterances and publications attributed to a former Commissioner for Information in the State, Barr Kelechi Okpaleke as cheap blackmail against his personality.
Mr. Offor who briefed the press over what he described as a fabricated story by Barr. Okpaleke alleging that he (Offor) demanded money from the former governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim to smear the image of Governor Rochas Okorocha, maintained that Barr Okpaleke was only using that to cover his shoddy deals and incompetence as a former Commissioner in the State.
The State’s image manager placed on record his career achievements spanning from his employment with Champion and Guardian Newspapers to his engagement as Correspondent of the Voice of America (VOA) and appointment as the Special Adviser to Governor Okorocha on Media, and expressed shock that a former Commissioner for Information would debase to the level engaging in cheap blackmail in order to seek relevance.
While maintaining that he does not intend to engage Barr Okpaleke nor any mischief maker in media war, Mr. Offor revealed that the former Commissioner within his four months stay as commissioner for Information under the Ohakim’s administration misappropriated a whooping sum of Fifty Million Naira (50m) which was charged to production of T-Shirts, breaking of wall at Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) and other frivolous bills.
Mr. Offor pointed out that Barr Okpaleke who hails from the same Local Government Area with him could not within the years he served as commissioner attract any development project to Onuimo LGA and described the former Commisioner’s utterances as “engaging in fig leaf job”. He therefore challenged Barr Okpaleke to be constructive in his presentations and face issues rather than malign the character of individuals.
