Senator Ike Ekweremadu: An inspiration to our generation.

Over the weekend, Deputy President of the Senate,  Ike Ekweremadu marked his    50th birthday. Indeed, it has  been fifty  golden years on earth.

Often Likened by many to President Barack Obama of America, Senator Ekweremadu is undoubtedly an inspiration to the youth of our generation.

A trained Lawyer by profession, Sen.Ekweremadu’s life story is one of a kind.  Armed with the grace of the Almighty, he rose through the ranks of an age grade leader and Town Union President  in his local community (Mpu), to the exalted office of Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate.

At the young age of 26, he set up his own Private Practice (Ike Ekweremadu & co) in Enugu. Between 1991 – 1997 , he was an Associates Lecturer at the Enugu Campus of the University of Nigeria where he lectured in the core areas of Constitutional Law and Labour Law.

The year, 1997 marked a pronounced entry into the realm of Politics when he was elected as the Executive Chairman of Aninri Local Government Council under the transition programme of Gen.Sani Abacha.

At the rebirth of Nigeria’s democracy in  1999,  Ike Ekweremadu served as Chief of Staff to  former Enugu State Governor, Chimaroake Nnamani following the latter’s victory.  In 2002, he was appointed Secretary to the  State Government.

On April 12th 2003, he was elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Four years later, it pleased the people of Enugu West Senatorial zone to return him for a second term. Following his re-election in 2007, he was elected Deputy President of the Senate unopposed. Again in 2011, victory was certain at the polls . He returned to the Senate for a third term.

In August 2011, Senator Ike Ekweremadu emerged the new Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS Parliament). It is on record that the Nigerian delegation had unanimously adopted Senator Ekweremadu. During the voting that followed, he secured the approval of all the Members of Parliament with all 87 votes in his favour. No abstention, no votes against.

We duff our hats to a leader who is proof that with hardwork and determination, there is no limit to the height we can attain. Who would have thought that Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s early service to his  local community would  pave way to the number five (5 ) position in Nigeria’s political hierarchy ?

In all, he remains humble and always has a listening ear to the plight of the needy. Through his Ikeoha Foundation, hundreds of students  in Enugu are awarded  scholarships to further their education. The organization also grants  Micro-credit to farmer groups in the Enugu West Senatorial zone which he represents at the National Assembly.

In place of a grand celebration to mark his birthday, a Service of songs was held in honour of his father, Igwe  Mathias Ekweremadu who passed on recently.

We wish our distinguished Senator Ike Ekweremadu many more years of good health to celebrate.
