The Health at Your – Door – Step programme has been launched in Imo State. Speaking at the occcassion, Governor Rochas Okorocha called on citizens to imbibe healthy life style choices to prevent diabetes and High Blood Pressure.

Unknown to many of us, Governor Okorocha’s father died of diabetes. He noted that diet and exercise remained the best way of preventing diabetes which claims the lives of about 20 million Nigerians.
According to Governor Rochas Okorocha, the Health at Your-Door-Step is designed to take health to rural communities through the provision of ambulances and trained personnel to carry out health screening in the rural areas. He assured that the State government will do everything possible to improve the health of the people. He also said that the State Government would soon introduce laws and fines against dirty environment because cleanliness was considered to be one of the major steps towards good health in any nation.
Governor Okorocha also disclosed that 27 Ambulances, 27 Prado Jeeps and 27 Hilux trucks had been distributed to ensure the success of the programme.
In addition to this, the state government has also purchased self test kits to check blood pressure and diabetes which will be distributed free to citizens to enable them monitor their health personally. He said that the next target was the screening of breast cancer and colon cancer.
Also speaking at the occasion, the state commissioner for Health, Dr Obi Njoku lamented the human cost of the diseases in the state and said that the administration has taken steps in the attempt to redress the trend. He said that government has already began the building and equipping the 27 New General Hospitals and reactivation of existing ones in the state to ensure that Imo become a healthy place for everyone. He further said that government intends to purchase genuine drugs and equipment to reduce the cost of treatment in the state. “Health at your-door-step initiative is designed to give quality health to the masses of Imo State”.
The First Lady, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha was also in attendance . While speaking at the event, she asked women to take special care of the health of their family and described the initiative as a new beginning of government’s effort to turnaround the health sector in the state. She sassured that the state government would do everything possible to improve the overall health for women and children in the state.
