Ex-Minister of Education, Prof.Mrs Chinwe Obaji added another year today. The beautiful Mrs.Obaji served as a Senior Minister in the Olusegun Obasanjo Administration from 2005 – 2006.
Prof. Chinwe Obaji made history on Wednesday June 8, 2005 when she was sworn in by President Olusegun Obasanjo as the first woman to occupy the substantive post of the Honourable Minister of Education of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Quoting excerpts from a 2006 publication of the Daily Champion, “That appointment placed a lot of burden on her and it appears she understood that fact. The political steps she took however left some people very uncomfortable. The result of those political steps is now history, as she has become former minister of education in just about a year after taking office.”
While serving the Nation in the capacity of Honourable Minister at the Ministry of Education, Prof. Chinwe Obaji worked towards resuscitating the Inspectorate Division of the Ministry. She started the one-meal-a-day project in some pilot primary schools across the country.
She directed that Universities should administer the Post University Matriculation Examination to candidate students in an effort by bypass the inefficiency of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
It will be recalled that in April 2006, Prof. Obaji detailed reforms to the design of the basic education system to ensure that every Nigerian child at least has access to basic education. As a result of this initiative, the Federal government set up a system of reprimanding parents who do not register their children for school, and started to recruit 40,000 teachers for rural communities.
We can go on and on. The little we have shared speaks volumes and many of us reading this will attest that Prof. Chinwe Obaji remains one of the BEST Ministers IMO STATE has produced.
Join us in wishing her good health and many more years to celebrate.
