In finding a lasting solution to the recent crisis in Ohaji/Egbema, the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu made a second visit to the Local Government.

The Hon member representing Ohaji/Egbema State constituency Chief Luke Chukwu took the Mr. Speaker led delegation to see the burrow pit where cows and cattle’s go to drink water after eating and destroying farm crops of Umuapu indigenes. The delegation also visited the grazed farmlands and other swampy areas in Umuapu Ohaji, Hundreds of cows and cattles were seen grazing and drinking water from the burrow pit.

In his remark, the village committee Chairman on cattle menace in Umuapu Ohaji, Hon Emeka Chukwu Alihie, intimated that in 2010 the Fulani cattle rearers went beyond maiming of the people, they started killing them and had their dead bodies thrown inside the burrow pit . He mentioned that an  SS3 student,  Grace Amadi was raped and killed in the farm last year.  Also an indigene,  Mr. Victor Chukwu was   shot dead while returning  from his farm with his wife.  He added that another indigene, Mr. Lawrence Isinwa was strangled to death in his farm by the Fulani cattle rearers. He regreted that  most recently the communities have not rested since this year’s farming season began for fear of being killed. .

This is because the Fulani cattle rearers have changed the test and choice of the cattle to graze on cassava, maize, vegetable and other farm crops. Incessant seizure of phones, burning of motorcycles, bicycles and snatching of money at gun point from the villagers are now the order of the day. These activities of the cattle reares have made Umuapu Ohaji once known as the food basket of Imo State to now suffer starvation – Hon.Emeka Chukwu

In his response, Rt.Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu thanked the people for their peaceful conduct. He assured them that the cases of rape, destruction of their farm lands by the Fulani – Hausa cattle reares would cease. He informed them that police check points would be stationed to assist in checking the menace of the Fulani people. He promised that the burrow pit would be sand filled and  assured that the  cattle rearers would be relocated to another location to prevent future crisis.

In closure, the Honourable member representing Ohaji/Egbema State Constituency Hon Luke Chukwu thanked Speaker Uwajumogu led delegation and expressed happiness that peace has finally returned to Umuapu – Ohaji Community. He assured the delegation that his people would remain calm until the entire process of peace is completed.

The traditional Ruler of Umuapu community HRH Eze B.U Ihueze, expressed his gratitude to the State Government for their timely intervention and re – assured that his people and community would remain loyal to the vision of the government.

A Peace Committee has been set up to resolve the conflict with the Cattle rearers.
